PSOs False Attacks on the MLPA
The PSO is intent on destroying the Marine Life Protection Act by any means necessary. Its tactics include wildly overestimating its costs and kicking out anglers from its coalition that support conservation measures (San Diego Union-Tribune, 10/29/08).

Members of the PSO have been attacking the MLPA since 2001. Now they reject the science behind MPA’s – despite California’s top marine biologists saying that MLPA’s are effective tools to protect ocean life.

One ASA member called protected areas in the oceans  “unpractical and unreasonable” and that “a reserve will not solve the problems” (The Daily News of Los Angeles, March 14, 2002). Another ASA board member, Darrell Lowrance,  said the MLPA is an idea of “irrational environmental groups” in a speech at ICAST, the industry's trade meeting in July 2008.

In June 2009, the PSO called for the suspension of the MLPA. “We call on California’s legislature to address this issue and put the brakes on the MLPA implementation process” (PSO Press Release, 6/1/09).
